Flower – Biisin tarina

Flower on The First Blood of War:n ohella vanhimpia tällä levyllä olevista kappaleista. Kirjoitin ensimmäisen version Flowerista vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilla, mutta tämä uudempi versio näki päivänvalon 2011. Biisi kertoo mielihaluista sekä pohtii onko jokin tietty asia oikeasti tavoittelemisen arvoista, vaikka sitä haluaisikin kovasti. Inspiraatio biisiin tuli hieman yllättävältä taholta, kuten kovin usein käy kohdallani. Sain kuulla erään tuntemani henkilön lähteneen mukaan aikuisviihdeteollisuuteen. Olin hämmentynyt ja jopa hieman järkyttynytkin asiasta, mutta samalla minua kiinnosti, että mikä sai hänet haluamaan kyseiselle alalle. Oliko tämä juuri sitä mitä hän halusi elämältään, vai olisiko elämällä tarjota hänelle jotain muutakin. Jälkikäteen voin todeta, että tuo oli vain yksi vaihe hänen elämässään.

Flowerin ensimmäisessä versiossa tunnelma oli varsin kylmä ja etäinen. Kuvittelin olevani kuin kärpänen katossa, mutta samalla häpesin mielessäni omaa kiinnostustani aiheeseen ja etäännytin kertojan ääntä kohteesta. Tähän uudempaan versioon muutin sanoitusta ja biisin tunnelmaa ”lämpimämmäksi” ja intiimimmäksi. Koin, että jos ihminen omasta halustaan tekee päätöksiä, ei niitä voi käsitellä kylmän etäisesti ja jopa tuomitsevasti, vaan on yritettävä päästä sisälle ko. henkilön ajatusmaailmaan ja tarkastella asiaa sitä kautta.

Pyrin usein lisäämään lyriikoihini useampia ulottuvuuksia. Niinpä Flowerkin toimii myös yleisemmällä tasolla. Jokainen varmaan jossain vaiheessa elämäänsä miettii, että onko juuri tässä hetkessä sitä kaikkea, mitä haluaa elämältään, vai voisiko elämä tarjota sittenkin jotain lisää, jotain muuta tavoittelemisen arvoista. Ei välttämättä, mutta eihän sitä koskaan tiedä, mitä kulman takana odottaa. Mutta sen tiedän, että jokainen päätös tai teko, jonka teet, jättää jäljen itsestään ja muokkaa sinua jollakin tapaa.

Flower – Story Behind the Song

Flower is – along ’The First Blood of War’ – the oldest song on this album. I wrote the first version of it around the turn of the millennium but this newer version saw daylight in 2011. The song is about desire and if a certain thing is really worth pursuing, no matter how badly you want it. The inspiration for the song came from quite a surprising direction, as is very often the case with me. I heard a person I know had gone to work in the adult entertainment industry. I was confused and a little bit shocked but at the same time I was eager to know what the reasons behind her decision were. Was this exactly what she wanted from her life, or would life have something else to offer her? In retrospect, I can say that was just one stage in her life.

In the first version of ‘Flower’, the atmosphere was quite cold and distant. I imagined myself as a fly on the wall, but at the same time I was ashamed of my interest in this subject, so I distanced the narrator’s voice from it. For this newer version, I decided to change the lyrics and the atmosphere warmer and more intimate. I felt that if a person makes decisions of their own will, I can’t be cold and resentful. Instead I have to get inside into the person’s world of thought and approach the subject through it. I often try to add more than one layer to my lyrics. Thus, Flower also works on a more general level. Everyone is probably wondering at some point in their lives if at that very moment they have everything they want in their lives, or if life could offer something more after all – something else worth pursuing. Not necessarily, but you never know what to expect around the corner. But what I do know is that every decision or act you make or do leaves its mark on you and shapes you in a certain way.

Mayflies – Story Behind the Song

Mayfly usually lives only for a day after hatching. Some of us humans, on the other hand, think they are immortal, or at least their fame will be. They try and force their way to celebrity by all means necessary. Celebrity is for them the end in itself; it’s not something that comes as a byproduct of achieving something real. Nowadays, in a time of ‘reality TV’ and social media, it’s quite easy to become celebrity. Your reputation might be questionable but for some people it’s “all publicity is good publicity”. So, as long as you remain topical, it doesn’t matter if you embarrass yourself on TV, post dirt on the social media, or waffle futilities on YouTube (though on YouTube there are many very professional content creators).

Reality TV, in my opinion, is the praise of stupidity. It’s everything but real. It’s scripted junk, the purpose of which I don’t understand. Of course there are some exceptions in this genre, too, but mainly it just shows people who want to become famous without offering anything in return – unless you take into account embarrassing yourself or bullying others. Reality TV makes entertainment out of malice. Social media mainly lives out of malice. It’s quite easy to spread malice and hatred on YouTube, too. Why do we want to be mean to each other and even brag publicly about it?

‘Mayflies’ differs quite a lot from other songs I’ve written. It’s the first I’ve purposely written for someone else to sing. For the first time I tried to step in someone else’s shoes as a singer and a human being. For this reason I was very unsure of myself during the writing process of ‘Mayflies’. Is it good enough, Is the pitch correct, Is the theme of the song appropriate, etc. When I played the demo first time to Soila, her reaction confused me. I wasn’t sure whether she liked it or loathed it. Fortunately for me, she liked it. Her rendition of it is incredibly fantastic so I guess I managed to capture in the song something that resonates with her personality.

Päivänkorento elää kuoriuduttuaan yleensä vain päivän. Jotkut meistä ihmisistä taas kuvittelevat olevansa ikuisia, jos ei muuten, niin maineensa kautta. He pyrkivät julkisuuteen hinnalla millä hyvänsä. Julkisuus on heille itsetarkoitus, ei jotain, joka tulee oikeiden saavutusten ja tekojen sivutuotteena. Nykyisin ”tosi-tv:n” ja sosiaalisen median aikakaudella julkisuutta on helppo hankkia. Maine tosin voi olla kyseenalaista, mutta joidenkin mielestähän kaikki julkisuus on hyvästä. Siksipä ei ole väliä, nolaatko itsesi tv:ssä vai kirjoitatko törkyä somessa, tai tubetatko tyhjänpäiväisyyksistä (YouTubessa toki jyvät erottuvat akanoista aika helposti), kunhan vain pysyt ajankohtaisena. Mutta veikkaisin, ettei kovin moni muista heitä sen jälkeen, kun julkisuus kohun ympärillä laantuu. He ovat julkisuuden päivänkorentoja.

Tosi-tv on mielestäni oikeaa tyhmyyden ylistystä. Se on kaikkea muuta kuin totta. Se on käsikirjoitettua höttöä, jonka tarkoitusta en ymmärrä. Tässäkin genressä on toki poikkeuksensa, mutta pääosin se vain tuntuu esittelevän ihmisiä, jotka haluavat tulla kuuluisiksi tarjoamatta mitään vastineeksi – paitsi jos itsensä nolaamista tai toisten mollaamista ei oteta lukuun. Tosi-tv tekee viihdettä ilkeydestä. Some elää suurelta osin ilkeydestä. Myös YouTubessa on helppo levittää ilkeyttä ja vihaa. Miksi haluamme olla ilkeitä toisillemme ja vielä rehennellä sillä julkisesti? ”Mayflies” on varsin poikkeava muista biiseistä, mitä olen kirjoittanut. Se on ensimmäinen biisi jonka olen tarkoituksella tehnyt jonkun muun laulettavaksi. Yritin ensimmäistä kertaa asettua jonkun toisen asemaan laulajana ja ihmisenä. Olin tästä syystä hyvin epävarma itsestäni, kun aloin tehdä Mayfliesia. Onko se tarpeeksi hyvä, onko laulumelodian sävelkorkeus sopiva, onko biisin aihe sopiva, jne. Kun sitten soitin demon ensimmäistä kertaa Soilalle, hänen reaktionsa hämmensi minua. En ollut varma, oliko hän tyrmistynyt vai hyvillään. Onnekseni kyse oli jälkimmäisestä. Soilan tulkinta biisistä on mielestäni uskomattoman upea, joten onnistuin kai tavoittamaan laulussa jotain joka resonoi hänen persoonansa kanssa.

Lockout (White & Blue) – Biisin tarina

White & Blue viittaa tässä biisissä Suomen lipun väreihin. Lockout taas ulkopuolelle sulkemiseen. Sanan varsinainen tarkoitus on työsulku, eli työnantajapuolen painostuskeino työtaistelun aikana. Tämän voi kuitenkin käsittää monitahoisemmin. Valtio on tavallaan kansalaistensa työnantaja, kansalaiset taas työntekijöitä. Demokratia on työtämme. Edellisen hallituksen aikana aloin kuitenkin kokea, että tiettyjä kansalaisryhmiä ollaan sulkemassa ulos yhteiskunnasta ja demokratiasta. Eräät tahot haluaisivat heikentää työehtoja ja sosiaaliturvaa siten, että orjuus olisi lähes palautettu voimaan ja he voisivat poimia kirsikat kakun päältä. Toiset tahot taas haluaisivat määritellä, mitä on suomalaisuus ja kuka voi olla suomalainen. Heillä tarkoitus pyhittää keinot, joihin kuuluvat mm. kaikenlaiset salaliittoteoriat ja valeuutiset. Vanhoja, jo umpeutuneita sisällissodan aikaisia haavoja revitään auki ja jakolinjoja luodaan uudestaan. Tarkoitus on saada se toinen puoli demonisoitua, että ”vihollinen” olisi helpompi kohdata epäinhimillisenä olentona eikä maanmiehenä tai -naisena (tai muunsukupuolisena). Koti, uskonto ja isänmaa olisivat se pyhä kolminaisuus, jotka määrittäisivät kansaa. Eli kärjistettynä naiset nyrkin ja hellan väliin, homot (ja muut ei-heterot) kaappiin tai keskitysleirille ja ei-kristityt (= kaikki, jotka eivät ole protestantteja) pois maasta tai myös keskitysleirille. Tämä ei ole minun Suomeni, tämä on natsidystopia. Suomi on lähes koko itsenäisyytensä ajan ollut tasa-arvon eturintamassa. Siksi valkoinen ja sininen ovat aina edustaneet minulle vapautta ja tasa-arvoa, solidaarisuutta ja empatiaa. Ja haluan, että ne edustavat näitä arvoja jatkossakin. Siksi en halunnut tehdä Lockoutista äärimmäisen synkkää, vaan halusin, että se uhmaa käsittelemiään aiheita myös musiikillisesti. Voit siis halutessasi vaikka tanssia vihaa ja vääryyttä vastaan, tasa-arvon ja suvaitsevaisuuden puolesta.

Lockout (White & Blue) – Story Behind the Song

White & Blue are the colours in the flag of my home country, Finland. Lockout, in turn, is a means of an employer to pressure their employees during an industrial action. They literally lock their employees out. In the context of Lockout (White & Blue), the state is the employer and the citizens are the employees. Democracy is our work. During the previous government in Finland (2015-19), I began increasingly to feel that some groups of people were being locked out of the society. Some parties want to weaken working conditions and social security in a way that nearly would bring back the slavery. Some other parties want to define Finnishness and who can be Finnish. For them the end justifies the means, which include conspiracy theories and fake news, etc. Old, already healed wounds of the Finnish civil war were being ripped open and the dividing lines were being created again. Their purpose is to demonize the ‘enemy’ so it would be easier to face them as inhuman creatures, rather than compatriots. Home, religion and fatherland would be the ‘holy trinity’ defining the nation. To exaggerate by generalizing: in their opinion, women’s place should be between fist and stove, gays (and other ‘non-straight’) should be in the closet or in the concentration camp, and non-Christians (= non-protestants in this case) should be out of the country or in the concentration camp, too. This is not my Finland, though. This is a Nazi dystopia. Finland has been at the forefront of the fight for equality for most of its independence. This is why for me white and blue have always represented freedom, equality, solidarity and empathy. And I want them to remain this way. This is also why I didn’t want to make Lockout sound too gloomy; instead I wanted it to musically confront the topics it deals with. So you can even dance against hate and injustice, for equality and tolerance if you want.
